Ultimate Dubs 2007 Review

It quickly became apparent that the first show the Edition was attending this year was massively oversubscribed by ourselves, in fact almost 3 times as many cars turned up than we could fit on the stand!…

5am… 5am!

After an early start to the day the Newport Edition met in a couple of locations in South Wales and headed to Ross-on-Wye, and from there headed on up to Telford en-masse.  It quickly became apparent that the first show the Edition was attending this year was massively oversubscribed by ourselves, in fact almost 3 times as many cars turned up than we could fit on the stand!

The journey up was certainly memorable, plenty of high speed action on ‘private roads’ which was fun, and watching Dan’s Corrado hurtling towards the back of a lorry was certainly an eye-opener.  Time to upgrade those brakes, Dan!  The only downer for myself was standing in a big pile of sick that was conveniently sat on the ground by my driver’s door as I stepped out.

On arrival there was a bit of confusion, so we thought we’d throw a bit more into the pot by saying we had 2 stands, one for us and one booked under CGTI Newport, just to see if we could get more cars in!  Needless to say the old ‘you can’t bullsh*t a bullsh*tter’ saying is certainly true - the girl on the gate was having none of it. Nice try by us though!

Once inside, Velly made a bit of a hash of organising us.  He was still drunk and could be heard muttering things like ‘feck, arse, girls and drink’ whilst slowly rocking back and forth.  We left him to it.  It was 2 hours before he made any sense - once he had his 5 burgers and 250 chicken nuggets inside him.

The show was larger than last year’s and the quality of cars on display was incredible.  Air-ride and the OEM+ look is certainly huge at the moment, as are Porsche and Mercedes rims, they were everywhere you looked.  We had a quick look around the (very few) traders, and then a gander at the cars on display.  The standard of some cars was amazing, but you have to wonder if these cars actually ever get driven?  In my opinion I prefer to see cars that get used properly rather than ornaments on wheels, but I certainly appreciate the work that’s gone into them.  Highlights for me were the oldskool white Audi Quattro and a rather lovely orange mk1 on air.  Monkey flyered the CGTI Golf with a Newport Edition card while we all giggled like schoolgirls.  Their stand was just 1 car and they were selling stuff from the boot of it.  Apparently the table had been sold to boost funds. ;-]

We wandered back outside and decided it was time for breakfast so we all headed for Maccy D’s, taking the most awkward short long-cut I’ve ever known. Once there we all ordered and started eating, then AJ turned up cursing out loud at the ‘big-boned’ girl behind the counter as she charged him 5p for sauce.  Heard a few swear words at that point and another girl working there looked well shocked… I think you had to be there to appreciate it, but it was as funny as hell!  After waiting for Velly to finish his feast of 379 burgers we strolled back and decided to look at the cars on the club displays outside, and the cars in the car parks.

The club stands for me were more interesting as these are the cars that get used properly, and there was plenty to offer.  Pretty much anything and everything from the VAG stable was there, and most of them had ATS Classics on them!  There was a lovely white mk4 Golf almost opposite our display and it looked great - I can see white making a big comeback as it’s so rare at the moment.  A few highlights for myself were a proper oldskool Passat in the car park finished in a cool Dukes of Hazzard style, a nice new black Leon (FR I think) on some lovely large rims, a lovely looking camper, and the car of the show - a Jetta with porno headlining and graffiti all over it, with pens on the bonnet to add your own graffiti - good work.

After a bit of chilling out around our own display we ventured back inside as Chris was whining about wanting to have a photo with some girls who were draped all over a Seat Ibiza.  Once inside he bottled it and we tried to drag him over but the mighty Taylor wrestled free and bolted for the bar.  I think they were impressed by his toughness.  We then had a few drinks in the bar and decided to head home.

The drive home was a quieter affair and was a much needed chillout after such an early start and a busy day.

Overall it was a great show to start the year off.  It was a shame we had so few spaces but this was our own fault not UD’s, next year we’ll hopefully be more organised.  An excellent turnout by the Edition for the first show of 2K7.  It’s easy to see that the standard of cars that will be doing the show scene this year is high, and as the year progresses and the weather improves more and more gems are likely to emerge for our viewing (and drooling) pleasure!  Bring on the show season!
