Ultimate Dubs 2009
No sooner than it arrived in all it’s diamond studded rim splendor, it was gone, and Ultimate Dubs 2009 just blew a gapping hole in Mr Browns big brown budget pants. The weakening economy might be slowing the purchase of wheel deals and coilover kits but one things for sure, there’s still a bunker load of creative talent out there on the dub scene.
For most die hard dubbers UD is the deadline for all those winter projects, full on ground up rebuild or simple drop chop and rim job there’s always stuff to sort out, including T&T (cough). So it wasn’t until late Thursday when I finally managed to get the MOT sorted and pot-hole tax bought leaving no window in the event of failure. Luckily the Rado passed without even so much as a blown bulb, even the emissions were well under the limit even with a ropey idle. Sweet! Out came the bucket and chamois (read Elite plush towel) for a late night cleaning sesh.
A few of us travelled up early Saturday morning; Gaz (Megane Standard) B, Tomos (Brown Love) and myself, to get a good room in the Motel and to help out with judging on the day, luckily they gave us a single double room with a massive bathroom! It was well warm all three of us snuggled up in one bed and the extra large bathroom/wet room even had a ‘special’ pull cord which sent a nice man racing to the door when activated. Lovely!
For many of the dub community Saturday night at Ultimate Dubs signals the end of winter build projects, that or it’s just a chance to mingle with anyone who’s anyone from the glossy magazine celebs. Either way it usually ends up a pretty messy affair with hotel room after parties going on well into the small hours. This year I found myself escorting some random emo bird from ClubLupo what must have been 4 miles across town to pick up her car. It was all for a good cause I might add, 20 Silk Cut for the big man and a ride in the fastest Lupo GTi I’d ever experienced. How we managed to escape the Law whilst driving around Telford centre (at 30mph) with The Prodigy (Smack my bitch up) pumping out of the twin 12’s in the boot I’ll never know. Cheers Clair!
Luckily I didn’t have the camera that evening so incriminating evidence is reduced to a few blurry mobile phone pics!
Sunday (show day) was heavy. The halls filled within minutes of opening and the queue at the doors snaked around the car park most of the day until the heavens opened for a shower of hail mid afternoon…
to be continued…
