Wörthersee 2011
For a show steeped in such legendary memories for the Edition and anyone else fortunate enough to visit, the epic Worthersee already seems so long ago. Ok, partly due to my inability to remember anything from the closing parties and last few nights in Reifnitz, but saving any dignity I have left, I wasn’t the only one with permanent memory lose and clothes lose for that matter.
Let me get the negatives out of the way first, don’t take this the wrong way but the 3 of us that ventured over back in 2010 were a teeny tiny bit disappointed. As with every preceding year, the show like the 29th anniversary back in 2010 was incredible, no other show or at least UK show, can come close to the formidable GTi Treffen. But after 5 days of automotive bliss, all 6 of us admitted we expected a little more for the 30th Anniversary.
VW, Audi, Seat and Skoda had once again blown the annual budget on this one show alone. Releasing new models for every generation of petrol head from the new Golf GTi Edition 35, the all new shape Beetle, Audi’s freshly styled RS range and Skoda’s concept cabriolet and Rally models.
The highlight of the main stages was Audi and the fan arena. Life long Audi fans and their modified efforts took centre stage in front of the official Audi design team. Taking turns to explain why they had decided upon 18″ Porsche splits for their 2000 TT or ignored the original ride height and opted for a suspension set-up a little lower than standard. Then in a Ghostbusters ‘Gozer the Gozerian’ style, all this German banter ended in the owner choosing his demise on stage by selecting a song on an iPad, swiftly followed by a gang of camp dancers storming the stage grabbing said owner in an attempt to make them look coool. Epic fail.
Volkswagen’s onstage show was much simpler with a trip through the ages with the Golf GTi, simple but effective with immaculate examples of each model through the years of production. Skoda on the other hand went for the ‘sex sells’ ticket and filled their stage with extremely beautiful girls to wash the cars, Sexy Auto Vash yah! All very entertaining and generated huge crowds of iPhone toting lads looking to get a few close up snatch, um i mean ‘snaps’ for their home screens.
Throughout the surrounding streets of Reifnitz snaking past the multimillion corporate stands, is were you find the real VAG fans cruising through the town in their latest attempt at getting a centre page spread in the scenes biggest publications. Euro, US, UK, German, Rat style, you name it, it’s all here from the utter jaw dropping to the quite frankly ‘gash’ style of mods. Although quite impressive, why someone would want a plasti-chrome dashboard in their Corrado or a billiard table complete with freaky mannequin hands in the boot of their TT, is beyond me.
So there goes another year. After the 5th night of ‘Pizza/Chips’, and struggling to explain why we wanted pomme frites ‘with’ lasagna, we said our final fair wells to the Kitty Haus. Massive thanks to Jill and Martin for another epic week of cheese and ham rolls, and cheesy sausages.
